The task of multitasking

The concept of multitasking has been rescued from obscurity. For over a decade it was used by almost everyone. At the turn of the century it was being spoken of less and less. It was another term that came out of the world of computers. The term, like its companion “interface”, was used to the point of nausea.

From the outset, it was a fraud. Individuals are not capable of undertaking more than one intellectual task at a time. One can drive down the highway and listen to the radio or car or a conversation. While it has the appearance of doing more than one thing at a time, it is not. The brain just bounces back and forth on both thought tracks.
